Chapter 2: The Night the House Stopped Feeling Like a House

It didn’t happen all at once.

That was the strange part.

Nothing in Maya’s life ever exploded loudly. It always cracked slowly, like ice under pressure.

That night, she woke up thirsty. The hallway light was still on, which meant someone was still awake. That alone made her pause. In their house, people didn’t stay up that late unless something was wrong.

She padded softly down the hallway.

That’s when she heard it.

Her dad’s voice.

Not loud. Not screaming.

Worse.

Controlled.

“What were you thinking?”

A pause.

Then her mom.

“I didn’t plan for this to happen.”

Maya froze.

There was something in her father’s silence after that sentence that made her stomach tighten.

The air in the hallway felt heavier the longer she stood there.

She didn’t understand the words fully. Not yet. But she understood tone. She understood tension. She understood when something was breaking even if she couldn’t see it.

She went back to her room and didn’t sleep.

The next morning, her mom was folding clothes like nothing had happened.

But she didn’t look at Maya the same way.

Not fully.

Not straight on.

And that was the first crack.

The one everything else would fall through.
